Once Upon a Time

Equipment: I’m actually not too sure about what pencil I was using to draw the picture, but the color was made from Prismacolor color pencils. The paper is just regular white copy paper.

I drew this picture over two years ago, in October of 2009, for another library art contest. I was given a T-shirt for it ‘being so good’, which made me happy I got something, even though I technically didn’t win. ^^ Despite being drawn two years ago, I still very much like the concept and design of it. I remember having a lot of trouble with the raven, but it turned out okay in the end…I think.

The theme of the contest was ‘Read Beyond Reality’, so I figured a dragon coming out of a story book would be sufficient. Funnily enough, the picture turned out so much cooler than I originally thought it would, which was a good thing! Usually I see pictures of things coming out of the book’s pages, but I thought that if a dragon came out of the book’s front cover, when the book was just resting on a desktop somewhere, it would be more interesting. The Dragon’s wing seems to be pulling out from between the pages, though, so he must be mentioned in that part of the book. I had a lot of fun doing the words on the book’s cover as well, and made them look as ‘standard fantasy’-like as I could…if that makes sense. The thought for this picture came from my mind, like most of my works, and nothing specific outside inspired it.
